This week I was reminded again of how our traditional health care system fails us. Over the past few weeks, I have heard from different people that their doctors would not order a simple Vitamin D test because it is "not warranted", although they have previously had this test drawn with low values and were put on a supplement. To that I just scratch my head...but, this past week another friend who has been suffering terribly with multiple disabling symptoms was not able to get some non-traditional labs needed from the ER or PCP to accurately diagnose these symptoms. This just makes me sad. My certification as a Functional Nutrition Counselor allows me to order lab tests through a limited selection of laboratories, but it is not covered by insurance and can be costly. But now, I just learned everyone has access to ordering their own tests! Another friend told me they went online, googled "order your own labs" and viola! found a lab, ordered the labs, went to Quest and with no questions asked, had those labs drawn! The downside is that insurance does not usually cover these, but, some testing centers offer deep discounts compared to insurance costs and copays. The best thing is - you have the freedom to choose! So I did a little research, and come to find out, many laboratories offer this service. I want to rejoice right now!
If you are being refused bloodwork tests from your primary care provider, you may want to check out this option. Be sure the website is legit, especially if you do not recognize the name. I use Direct Labs for ordering labs, but you may be able to find even less expensive options. Also, some states do not allow this option, so be sure to read through the site information if you are looking into this option.
