Happy Hump Day! How is your week going so far?
I spent time weeding all my gardens after work yesterday. It was such a beautiful day here, perfect to be outdoors. I was very productive! I added new soil to my raised vegetable garden beds and planted lettuce and onions (seed package gave the go ahead to plant before the threat of last frost). I have garlic sprouting already from the fall planting, soon there will be garlic scapes, YUMMY!! Two weeks ago, I planted potatoes in containers. I have never tried this, so it's my experiment using the eyes of old potatoes I had left over from Steve's trip to Maine this past winter when he brought home a 20lb bag...oh my!
My raised garden bed is 4'x16'. Two years ago I started with 4'x8' to see if it would take, and it did, so last year I doubled it. It is still too small, so I may add some containers or maybe add another 4' section. In the next coming weeks I will add more plants - lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, basil, oregano, and anything else I can fit in. Last year I grew green beans, they grew like crazy, seriously, all I could think of was "Jack and the Beanstalk". This year I will have to plan a little better, and get taller stakes for them to grow on.
I love the idea of growing veggies, really, who doesn't love a fresh garden tomato?! Sometimes I can't get to the farmers markets, so having a garden is great! But, I have bunnies in the yard who like the garden too! Even though I added herb plants as a deterrent, one resident bunny still made her way in and ate the broccoli last year. If you look closely at the picture I've added, this bunny actually took a break in the shade from my tomato plants! LOL!! And then we have chipmunks who dig for the seeds, so I hope my lettuce and onion seeds make it. Last year I had lots of holes where my seeds were. (My cat does not do her job, she prefers to hunt in my neighbors' yards.)
Mmmm, I am thinking about those fresh garden tomatoes, and well, maybe I will have to learn how to make sourdough bread to make tomato and basil sandwiches, or to dip in the olive oil from the tomato and basil salad?? Now there's an idea!
This is my gardening story. Do you grow vegetables or any other food in your yard? I would love to hear about it!
In good health,
Bobbi
